1. The house would face east, so that natural light could be utilized most of the time.
2.All sitting areas, a bathroom, kitchen, etc. are on the main level so that the lower levels really wouldn’t need to be used until sundown, when the artificial lighting would be necessary anyway.
3. I would like to rig the entire house to be able to use candles as well as electricity, so I’d like to buy candleholders for each room and see if I couldn’t have some chandeliers in the entrance hall rigged for candles as well, or at least to look like candles.
4. If possible it would be built completely out of concrete, to insulate in winter and keep cool in summers. It would keep energy use down, meaning helpingthe environment and my wallet! See “Concerning Hobbit-holes: An Introduction to My Project” for a picture of what I mean.
5. Rain barrels are an affordable and old-fashioned-looking way of recycling water directly from the rain. I also see these as an aesthetic addition to my gardens, possibly right by my vegetable garden.
There, a significantly shorter post! This is just a sampling of what examples I’d had thought of off-hand, plus five is a nice round number I should try to keep lists like this to in the future.
